Meeting Minutes

General Meeting
Tuesday, February 15, 2011

President Frank Smith called the meeting to order at 7:06pm; there were 23 people in attendance. President Smith updated the membership on several different things:

  • Our membership bank account currently has $8,802.00. More funds will be added as new memberships and renewing memberships will be received over the next few months.
  • Mrs. Edith Reese has worked diligently to secure grant funds to place eight different recycling bins around the neighborhood; samples were available for the members to view
  • The City Planning Department has contacted our neighborhood association for support of the restoration of the old depot building located on the corner of Jefferson Street and Williamson Road. Significant progress should be seen by this summer.

Guest Speakers at the meeting:
John Carlin, spokesman for the “Blue Ridge Marathon,” and the marathon committee addressed the upcoming run set for Saturday, April 16th, and how it will affect the South Roanoke neighborhood. The committee is very thankful for our neighborhood’s support and hopes that we will come out again this year. About three hundred volunteers are needed; please visit the website – www.blueridgemarathon.com for details and volunteer opportunities. Road closings will include: Avenham Avenue, northbound, in the parking lane; Peakwood Drive, northbound, you can drive down the street, but not up; Westridge, southbound, you can drive up the street but not down. These closings will be in effect from approximately 7:30am until 2:30pm on the day of the race.

Paul Chapman and Chris Gyerson spoke about the history of Roanoke “Parks and Recreations Department;” it was started in 1914 and currently manages 68 parks, 5 greenways, and Carvins Cove and hosts almost 1,100 programs for the people in the Roanoke Valley to enjoy. There are a wide-variety of fun and exciting opportunities to fit everyone’s interests. Check out their link on the www.roanokeva.gov website for more information.

Dale Crawford from the code enforcement division notified the membership that the number to call to report possible code enforcement violations (abandoned cars, excessively tall grass) is 853-1049. A complete listing of violations is found on the www.roanokeva.gov website.

Officer J.T. Rogers reported on the safety of our neighborhood. Complaints about speeding in several addressed and were found to not be a huge problem by the police department; Yellow Mountain Road is a potential problem, but the lack of space for proper radar surveillance by a police car makes it difficult to observe and control. He addressed concerns by several residents regarding activity after 9:00pm on the park behind Crystal Spring Elementary School. The police department does not have the manpower to secure an officer at the site every night at 9:00; however, if a resident notices activity that should be reported to the police; please call the non-emergency number – 853-1988, and an officer will be dispatched.

Board Member, Barbara Duerk offered to provide a ladder on behalf of the neighborhood that could be signed by the community residents. The ladder artwork project is sponsored by the Taubman Museum.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:48pm
